The Eastern Columbia Condo Lofts building

The Eastern Columbia Condo Lofts building is a beautiful turquoise terra cotta and gold leaf 13-story art deco tower.  It epitomized the height of an opulent era when it opened in 1930. Originally, Claude Beelman constructed the building in 1930 for the Eastern Columbia Outfitting Company.  It opened on September 12, 1930 after just nine months of construction.  It was built at a cost of $1.25-million as the new headquarters and 39th store for the Eastern Outfitting Company and the Columbia Outfitting Company, furniture and clothing stores founded by Adolph Sieroty and family.  It was a department store much like the Bullocks-Wilshire Department Store, another Art Deco icon.  The city’s airwaves chimed the jingle “Eastern Columbia, Broadway at Ninth” over several decades to advise Los Angeles shoppers of new arrivals and special offers at Downtown’s flagship department store.

The Eastern Columbia was modernized by the KOR Group and Killefer Flammang Architects in 2007. Today, this historical and cultural monument offers residents a unique downtown experience with its luxurious contemporary upgrades and classic period details.  The Eastern Columbia is referred to as the “Jewel of Downtown” and the Art Deco Jewel of the West.

The 147 live/work lofts showcase the timeless details of the early 20th century along with modern upgrades. The Eastern Columbia has great amenities. The rooftop features a leisure terrace with an impressive sky deck. The rooftop is underneath the famous clock tower and the sky deck features a swimming pool, spa, lounging cabanas, outdoor fireplace and a fitness studio that offers great views of the city. Also, another impressive feature that the Eastern Columbia has is its grand lobby. The grand lobby is sophisticated and magnificent reminiscent of the opulent era when this building opened.  The lobby has been transformed by interior designer Kelly Wearstler. The thirteen-story, turquoise terra cotta landmark is now also home to stylish Swedish apparel company Acne Studios’ 5,000-square-foot boutique.

The project earned California Construction Magazine’s Best Redevelopment in 2007, McGraw Hill’s Best Redevelopment of ’07 Award, and the 2007 Multi-Housing News Adaptive Reuse Award.  The Eastern Columbia Lofts earned a 2008 Los Angeles Conservancy Preservation Award.  The building is a participant in the Mills Act Historic Property Contracts Program.

Eastern Columbia is located in an exciting area of the Historic Core that borders the Fashion District and South Park. Umami Burger ®  is across the street and the Eastern Columbia is moments from many Downtown L.A. hotspots such as restaurants, bars, the Staples Center ®, LA Live ®, the Arts District and the Disney ® Concert Hall.   Retail in and around the Eastern Columbia, located at the intersection of 9th Street & Broadway, has grown.  Acne Studios® Aesop®, Tanner Goods® are some newer stores and the Urban Outfitters® is now located in the Rialto Theater.

The Eastern Columbia provides residents a sophisticated experience with its opulent architectural details.

One of the great features of the Eastern Columbia is its form, with its beautiful symmetry and geometry.  The multiple columns show the lines and height of the building.  There are many shapes, patterns and motifs of the Art Deco era.  There are sunbursts, chevrons, zig-zags and stylized plants and animals.  The main entrance is spectacular with all these beautiful details. The flying buttresses above the clock tower are another mark of Art Deco.  The four sided clock tower is emblazoned with the name “Eastern” in neon and crowned with a central smokestack surrounded by four stylized flying buttresses.  The Eastern Columbia was listed as Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Monument No. 294 in 1985.
